We’d like to welcome Jessica Shelden to the Leneva Park team. Jess has joined us as a Track Rider and she has blown us away with her skills. A Track Rider plays a vital role in conditioning thoroughbreds to a level of fitness suitable for racing.
She can handle any horse and can work with them throughout their entire career – from breaking in to pretraining. Jess started riding almost as soon as she started walking, learning on a black and white Shetland pony call Nicky. Her dad took her to riding lessons locally in Cranbourne. This is where she met former jockey, George Eccles, who gave her riding lessons on his 50 acre property. Jess has been recognised for her superb riding skills from jumpers to pony clubs. In 2004, Jess won the "First Place Instructors Award", the most recognised prize at Cranbourne Pony Club within 6 months of joining. Over the years, she has worked for Stirling Equine, spending time at the Equestrian Centre with a large indoor arena based in Pakenham South. She has also worked for Tony Vasil at Caulfield Racecourse mucking boxes. and with Billy Cantalyn, who breeds thoroughbreds in Euroa. It was at Mark Webb’s property in Pearcedale where she learnt to ride track work on sand tracks and across sand dunes. Jess did a stint for trainer, Russell Clarke in Pakenham. She also had a job breaking horses and leading trail rides at Billabong Ranch in Echuca and at Tonimbuck. She joined Leneva Park in August 2020 to pursue her dream to be a jockey and trainer.
